Oyster House

Ideal Home Show, 1998

As a spirited response to the first of a series of competitions to design an affordable house with flair for the Ideal Home Show, Coates came up with the sculptural timber shell hovering above a cruciform timber deck. The idea was to make the day living space on the ground floor as open and flowing as possible, while the bedrooms upstairs would encourage a distinct sense of territory for all of the occupants. Many of the objects he designed for the house such as the OXO sofa system and the oyster furniture, went on to be successful products.
